BX 19GTi Speedo Cable

Post by encargado »

Hi All,

Have just got myself a 1989 BX 19 GTi (8v) and have a bust speedo cable. Trying to buy one of these is like trying to find hens teeth. Does anybody know if a cable from a Peugeot 309 1.9 will fit?

Will post some pics oin the gallery when I get them uploaded :-)

Thanks in advance

Hi JayW,

It would appear to be the bottom section as the speedo still moves when you part the cable and twist the top section.

Have tried all the factors here in Reading and they are telling me the part is no longer listed :-(

FWIW, it's actually quite easy to make up a speedo inner cable by cleaning, tinning, soldering and then filing square the end of a donor cable .................

I've just made up a tacho cable for a motorbike I've rebuilt (and for which spares are unobtainable) using this method - in fact it was the only method when I was a teenager, and new spare parts were well out of reach of most apprentice's pockets. :?

It sounds more likely that the speedo drive itself is the culprit, I've had it happen on a 405 (BE3).

AFAIK most speedo cable failures are at the speedo head end rather than the gearbox end...

Once you can clarify which part you need i'm pretty sure sourcing one on here won't present much of a problem.

Looking forward to the pics!

I phoned my local GSF this morning and they told me they were no longer listed, maybe I will call the mail mail order line and see if they can still get hold of them.

Thanks again

Quite frequently I find items on the GSF website are NLA.

Normally whenever you ring ANY branch they tell you what they have in group stock so i'll be surprised if they do have any. Although in all fairness, most of the muppets at GSF Reading don't even know what a BX is...

IF
it's the speedo drive (in the gearbox) i may have a spare.

I agree with the GSF comment there, their other mantra appears to be "Dealer only part mate" especially when it comes to Volvo parts.

I will take the cable out and check the drive today.

Thanks to all you guys for the suggestions, but I have finally managed to source a replacement cable from a guy breaking a BX on flea bay. I know it has been some time since the last post, but work etc has been manic and I have not had the time.

Thanks again for the offers and suggestions, but I now know how fast I am going again.

Next stop is ignition and drive shaft :)
