Pipe question

Post by toddao »

I've just started re-piping and I've noticed that the front to rear hydraulic pipe that I've got is no.96119932 which is specified on Citroen Service as being for right hand drive. The one for left-hand is 96117584.Does anyone know whether I can make it fit or must I order the L/H version?

P.S this is first pipe work that I've done - what do I need in the way of seals etc?
Cheers
Todd

Replying to my own post.. sort of

I see that the 3.5mm pipe seals are available from GSF for 65p each. Does anyone know whether they are still available from Citroen as I can't locate them on the Service website? I'm going to the Stealer tomorrow and that would be handy for ordering.

Cheers again!
Todd

I'd be certain they would be - they're used on most of the pipes. From memory it's only the brake pipes on ABS versions (4.5mm - no need to worry on yours) and main feed from hydraulic pump (6.35mm) which are different.
Can't help you with the other - good luck!

Thanks Mat - I need a lot of luck as I'm fighting this wreck on several fronts!

Thanks Malcolm. I thought you might know!

They're twice as much as from GSF but would that be twice as much quality I wonder? Like the strut return pipes.

Probably the postage from Uk would offset the difference anyway.

re the pipe, I'm just going to remove the old one ( what's left of it) and offer it up against the new R/H version and see what can be done

i very very seldom use new pipe seals, i just pluck any strand's off that are sticking out at the ends of the seal, were the thread has cought them and re/use unless they are completly cream crackerd,

as for quality i think the dealers are extautionet but when you compare the two theres is a lot of diference, like sphere seals i never use the after maket seals supplied with the likes of AMTEC spheres, i againg re/use the original old ones with no prob's,

The 3.5mm seals are the same as 2CV (disc brake models). ECAS do a pack of ten for £2.75.

I ordered them this morning from the local stealer. It's always funny parking the BX outside amongst the shiny Ferraris, Maseratis, Bentleys etc, walking across the showroom packed full of more of above and going to the parts room round the back and ordering a few €€s worth of parts. They still handle Citroen though they've moved onto the more exotic marques.
Herr Wolf in the parts room was sat there amongst packing cases of Bentley parts, studying the Bentley portal but he's always pleased to help keep my BXs going!

Front struts are still available by the way - a mere €650 each!

Thankyou. It actually went quite well today and I've got a small gas heater in the garage now too so I didn't turn blue immediately.

One more question re the pipe unions -

I can't tighten them 'to the specified torque' as there's no way I can get my torque wrench in there. What's a rough idea as to how tight they should be?

Cheers

1 finger and a small grunt .......?

Seriously Todd, if you use a spring balance hooked onto a spanner of known length, it's simple math to work out load over length to arrive a torque figure. So, a pull of 20 pounds on a 1 foot long lever = 20 ft lbs. On a 6" lever it would be 10 ft lbs (half the leverage see?).

I'm lucky, I have a 1 foot spanner for one of the weirder bolts I have to torque regularly and a spring balance calibrated in pounds.

If in doubt, do them looser than you think and just tighten them up till they stop leaking, plus a little more. I think you'd really have to be brutal to damage them by overtightening, unlike similar sized pipes with copper or brass olives.

Todd - which pipe(s) are you replacing? are you having to drop the rear subframe to get access? is it possibel to remove an individual pipe without damaging others? - they all looked pretty close together in places when I last looked and I wondered how i'd replace them if i ever had to. Steve

That's where I always go wrong. I tend to go in with a breaker bar and a big grunt, and end up cracking a nut.

I started today removing the front to rear pipes - shocking condition. Then I'm doing rear brakes, moving - not so swiftly - on to the front and whatever needs replacing there.. I haven't had to remove the subframe yet. I'll let you know.
Also diesel feed/return ( again shocking) are being done while I'm 'down under.'

Thanks Bob for that idea - maths isn't one of my subjects really, one grunt will suffice!
