Collected my new project yesterday, she was taken off the road in 2007 with a running problem thought to be a fuel pump. It does start and run, BUT smells of petrol and seems to keep trying to stall then suddenly comes back to life again, when you rev the engine the throttle seems to stick slightly before it returns to normal tick over.
The fuel pump itself is quite noisy and you can hear it running.
Thanks!

Lots of Motors, mostly semi broken....
Try... disconnect cable & check that throttle moves freely and returns to end stop okay.
There should be a switch indicating throttle is closed - check this clicks when it should and check its okay electrically. If this is broken it can cause funnies as the engine controller does not know when to do idle speed control.
Check all the vacuum lines and rubber hoses between the idle valve, the intake manifold and any rocker breather tubes - any leaks here generally mess up idle performance.

I don't think it is anything to do with an idle valve, more likely to be the second butterfly that is not able to operate smoothly and close under it's independent spring pressure. This is probably due to light corrosion on the shaft in the throttle body. Clean it, lubricate it and work it and I'm sure you'll see an improvement.
