DEXRON 2

Post by Tim Leech »

My TZi is heading down to Chevronics next monday to have the rear arm bearings and rear spheres done. Ive asked them to change the ATF and filter too. Ive spoken to my local factors to get the Dextron 2 in for me, they keep a Millers oil which is the equivilent to Dextron 2 which is £13 for 5litres.

Im happy with the price but a little unsure in the word "equivilant", is "Dexron 2" the brand name?, I know what happens if the wrong fluid is used.

Cheers

I don't think I would.

Stick out for the proper stuff. You won't get a second chance if it's wrong.

Where do I get the proper stuff from? Just I know how much Citroen charge, probably about 3 times as much!

Millers Oils are very good - I use their ST90 green gear oil in my Schmitt's gearbox

Dexron is a brand name of General Motors so any atf to the same spec will be just fine!

Remember, just because Citroen prefer Total does not mean that we don't all put different oils in our cars!

True, I use VW (quantum branded) oils in all my stuff, purely as I get it at cost +2%.

Tim why not try AEP-DIRECT quote CCC1 as advertised in the back of the citroenian. They list ATX auto transmission fluid £5.99 for 1litre.

Any reputable brand stating DEXRON II compatible will do just fine. Avoid "universal" fluids. Having said that, D3 was created to replace D2 so would be just as effective (if not better), there's far too much thought going into ATF compatibility, it's only much more modern model specific fluids that are actually NOT compatible.

As mentioned though, DEXRON itself is a brand name of GM and not a specification. Anyone wanting to get particularly anal:

I have been led to believe that DIII is a NO NO for the BX's 'box? :?

Why take the chance? Just use DII and be done surely? You know it makes sense Tim.

I agree, that was my point.

I'd be VERY surprised if you can find anything official along those lines, it's all-too-common hearsay or comes from coincidental malfunctions after an oil change.

D3 superceded D2 encompassing it's "specifications" and extending them to cover more moden applications (in 1994 I believe). In almost all cases it is fully backwards-compatible.

I read DII is suposed to be being phased out now replaced by DIII. I've not looked but have heard DII is hard to find on the shelves now?

Probably due to the lessening need for it. Lower demand always kills production.
