Splitter question

Post by Philip Chidlow »

This might be construed as 'technical'...?

Has anyone ever painted the black front splitter found on GTi/TZi BXs. I know it's a big ask given how flexible it is, so I wondered with the right prep, primers and paints is it do-able with any degree of success?

My old orange Belgian import had it's splitter painted and it looked the same as the bumper.

As it's only PP or ABS, you'll just need a regular plastic primer.
I have zero patience for your tedium.

I had one on my RD Turbo which had white overspray on it. When the RD got scrapped the splitter went on my GTi after I'd simply cleaned it and applied a coat of Holts Satin Black from a rattle can straight on to it. Still holding up well nearly 10 years later (although it's not actually on a car at the moment!)

Hi Kevan. The "splitter" is the front Bib spoiler as fitted to GTI or TZD etc on the bottom edge of the front bumper.

In this case ABS = Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene. It's a plastic often used for spoilers etc on cars. In this case, Phil was referring to the front splitter aka chin spoiler, as seen on this car here:
