Wheels from a BX 16TRS ok for a 17TZD?

Post by andycadabra »

Having buggered up 2 drivers-side front wheels in the space of 2 nights (low speed collisions with kerbs on icy back streets), I'm thinking of replacing them with ones from my old 16 TRS.
Having trawled through manuals, the wheel size for the TZD is 5.00B 14 FH 4.25, and tyre size is 165/70 R14, and the wheel size for the TRS is 120 TR 365 FH 4.30, and the tyre size for that, as given in the French manual is 170/65 R365 TRX AS.
All a bit confusing I'm afraid, so if anyone can help I'd be grateful. If the wheels are compatible, are the tyres too?, and if the wheels are not compatible at all, could a pair of them be used on the rear?

I'm sure the wheels will fit they share the same hub characteristics.

PCD 4 x 108 15-22 ET and a 65mm centre hole. So long as the tyres are 14" 165/70 or 175/65 I see no problems with interchangeability.

Thanks Philip - I suppose each tyre should match the other on the same axle, although front and back could be different sizes?

I didn't realise there was any difference at all in the wheels. I'm sure I'm still using at least a couple of wheels from my old 16TRS on the TZDs - lots of mixing and matching going on! However I've only ever used 165/70 14 tyres - the TRS certainly never had 175/65 while I had it.

Your best bet is to look at the actual size of the tyres on the wheels from your old TRS. If they are 120 TR 365 FH 4.30 then you must have had a very early TRS from 83/84 but those wheels and tyres were replaced very early in the BX's life with the 5.00B 14 FH 4.25 variety through to the end of production. The only place I've seen those early wheels is in the Citroen Conservatoire in Paris on an exhibit as they are very rare!

But yes, they will fit anyway but beware of the age of the tyres.

I hope you've got at least axle matching tyre sets, i personally don't like driving cars with different tyres, just not safe imho.

Legals:

Front and rear tyre/wheel size combinations can vary as much as you like however you MUST have the same tyre/wheel size on each axle.

So, you can go for the dragster look if you like but not the lop-sided look.
I have zero patience for your tedium.

 Well to be completely anal
120 mm = 4.725"

365 mm = 14, 374 (3/8)

The offsets are within 4 mm.

That's against 5" for the width x14" dia.

The tyre profiles 70% of 165 and 65% of 175 come within 2mm.

All this is just mathematics because you would have to know the difference it makes to the rolling radius squashing one tyre into the smaller width wheel or stretching the other to 5".
I suspect the difference to the overall rolling radius would be miniscule and certainly within the speedo's callibration.

Not here... got to stick to the standard (or manufacturer's approved alternative) sizes.
