I've missed the background to this, so apologies if this has already been suggested, but if your old starter motor's not been doing the job properly since it was fitted, then maybe it's designed for a petrol engine. I made the same mistake as I had a starter from my old TRS on the shelf and it fitted perfectly, but turned the engine over so slowly it wouldn't start.

Just been discussing that with Mat on Facebook. It started struggling as soon as it got colder back in October, so it might well be a petrol one. Worked fine when it was warm and the oil was less gloopy!
Are there any external clues? The only difference I can see is minor differences where the wires attach (a 10mm for the small connector rather than 8mm) and the main case seems shorter on the diesel one (though overall length is about the same).

Not sure what the differences are - as far as I remember they looked sufficiently the same that I didn't notice 'til it failed to work properly...
