[quote="anorthfield"]Mulley - I'm in Epsom, so thanks very much but it's not practical.

You should be able to buy the stuff from any decent motor factors, i forget what its actually called, but someone in the shop will probably know what it is when you mention tank fungus, i think it was about £7-8 for a bottle which does quite a few tankfuls, which i guess is handy to do a few times to ensure that the fungus is all killed off.

No vacuum in the tank. I tried that. I wouldn't have thought that it would immediately restart if it was sludge or any form of blockage. And if it was sucking in air, I'd expect to see the air in the 'transparent' inline filter.

Thanks for all your head scratching - Im still scratching mine

A restriction in the fuel line (sludge or partial blockage) will normally manefest itself as cutting out when a higher demand of fuel is required i.e.
When rapid acceleration or hill climbing. The injection pump demands more fuel than is supplied causing a vaccum in the supply line, It will often restart after it has cut out because the vacuum has had time to replace the fuel shortage.???

My RD had suffered like this due to what turned out to be a perforated pre heater pipe. Under normal conditions it seemed fine, but under load it would suck air in, stalling the engine. Generally by the time we'd coasted to a halt the engine had already pulled most of the air through and it started again.
