cooking oil

Post by johnbird »

Will the bx diesel turbo run on fresh new clean cooking oil? Single point injection? I used to run my shoun on it. The car is due a diesel filter change and I was going to hold off doing it until a few litres og cooking oil have perculated through and loosened any sediment.that's if it will run on veg oil. Apologies for the spelling but I'm on a phone and have fat fingers! John

If it has a Lucas pump don't do it. If it has a Bosch pump then yes, you can use veg oil, but personally - I wouldn't exceed 50% mix (although some run 80% or more in warm weather). Some on here say using veg oil will eventually kill even a Bosch pump.

Thanks. I will take a look at the pump over the weekend. Are they expensive to replace? My shogun ran on 85 percent veg oil in the summer. Didn't seem to do it any harm. Do you ever put a litre or two of unleaded through the tank? Parrifin? With a bottle of acetone it works wonders as an injection cleaner. John.

Welcome to BXClub John :-)

The first BX I bought the previous owner was running it on 95% SVO and 5% unleaded - but he was an idiot and was using SVO in the hydraulics as well which rotted the seals very quickly.

As Phil said - Lucas pumps are a no-go area for SVO. Sometimes you can get things growing in the SVO that will block the filter. Although at the start of my owning diesel BXs I was interested in SVO / biodiesel, I'm more interested in keeping the engine sweet these days so I'm running it on BP Ultimate !

Here here I'm with you on that Brian. More trouble and costly than it's worth IMHO running alternate fuels, keep the engine sweet and keep the maintenance bills dowm whilst prelonging the life of the car which should aslo be a lot greener too with the added piece of mind.
