Look at the cambelt cover (black plastic) if it's held together by spring-clips round it's perimeter then it's a 1.7 If it's held together by screws it's 1.9.
I have zero patience for your tedium.

I have a 19 txd and a 17 txd turbo both have clips on cam belt covers, i thought all bx diesel cam belt covers were held on with clips

I've never seen a BX cambelt cover held on with screws, thankfully :)

I thought the easiest way of finding out which engine fitted was to put your foot down, if its the 1.7 n/a its sloooooow, if its the 1.9 n/a its slightly quicker

My 1.9 turbo engine has clips... :P (swapped from the old engine).

I think it's more down to date actually - the later the engine, the more chance it has of having bolts rather than clips.

it's insured as a 1.7n/a tgd have found a garage locally who will check it and do an insurance report if needed

As a simple question, why?

If its a 1700 on the log book and your happy with the way the car is, just leave it all as is and use it. (that would be my preferred option) i mean, its a 20 plus year old, who really cares about 180cc extra in this instance?
