Hence doing it off the car so the joint can be positioned uppermost (as heat rises)

This thread was perfect timing as the pre-MOT on the wife's BX has fingered the same ball joint, and I was going to tackle the job next week. However, one snag - I can't get the tools!! Neither Pleiades nor AEP can help, nor could my local motor factor. A call to my local Citroen dealership confirmed what I'd read on the forum before - if you ain't a franchised dealer, f.o.a.d.
So there now be two of us in need of the tools to do the job - can anyone help on this?? If we can't get the kit it means paying a dealer to do it; ouch, mutter mutter.

I think my txd is in need of a replacement ball joint as well due to some clonking sounds. Anybody know which manufacturer seems the best as this one which was cheap crap i bought, & in less than 2 yrs needs replacing, i bet the original was on the car for years

Is it worth actually ordering a citroen one?

Cheers for that - I missed that one. What about the other one though.looks like an adjustable splitter, Haynes give it a part number in the illustrations. Do we not need that one as well? Pardon my ignorance, the only ball joints I've ever had to do were Land-Rover ones where you just mullered the end with a clubhammer and off it popped. I do have the basic universal tool but not what's shown in the pics.

these tools are for unscrewing the joint from the bottom of the hub carrier,

not for seperating the swivle pin from the lower arm,

I rather suspect it's for stopping the leg turning axially when you exert a turning force on the balljoint socket Kev.

An elegant - if rather over-engineered solution.

ah ha! I was thinking the ball joint was attached to the wishbone not the suspension leg.

Detaching the joint from the wishbone is usually no problem - the challenging part is taking it off the hub carrier: http://www.rmattila.com/images/remontit ... vel019.jpg .

It gets more straightforward if you go through the trouble of taking the hub carrier off the strut and taking it to the shop, but with those tools it is easy to do the job with the hub carrier in place, thus saving the trouble.
