Possible to make raised suspension softer??

Post by adriches »

Hello Bx owners! I have a peugeot 405 4x4 which has a similar rear suspension to a bx. Its going to be used off road so have got some taller springs for the front and have adjusted the ride height sensor to match at the back. Trouble is, when its up like that it rides very hard at the rear. So I was wondering if there is any way of making it ride high and soft??
Thanks for your help.

I think Mulley was suggesting using a piece of Spam as a ride softener..

either that or he thinks that someone's leg is being pulled. We've had quite a few 'jokers' around here recently.. :D

Nice try head over to Aussie Frogs and ask there they may have a better idea about your Pug problem www.aussiefrogs.com

If you are genuine, then apologies, but theres that many dicks out there yanking our chain (not that it matters as some of the follow up postings are quite amusing).

Your posting tbh show that you know naff all about the differences, hence my immediate thoughts were spam.

erm, 4x4 405's did have hydraulic rear ends, so I can't see where the spam is?

How did you raise the ride height mate?

IIRC 405's didn't have a manual height lever in the car so I assume it's just a fixed height controller?

Hence I'm guessing you adjusted the height on the ARB clamp?

The only way I can think of is to lengthen the rod on the rear suspension cylinders.

Am I right in thinking the 405s had an electric pump?

Not sure Mat, the Mi16 4X4 I saw had a HP pump on the gearbox as per BX.

The suspension was soft before you raised the height then?

It could be the spheres are flat, or maybe the arm bearings are unused to being that far up!

If it's the same set up as on a Citroën then it gets 'stiffer' at higher heights due to the rear arms being pumped too close to the bump stops. I think the Peugeot will have rubber bump stops too?

It might be possible to replace the stops with much shorter ones (like those off the front of a GS or CX - much flatter) and make sure the new height you've set it to is not topped out as this will make it solid :)

I'd be keen to see some photos of this car's rear suspension to compare it to the BX
