anyone any ideas how to fix this doesn't work when you push it,and if can be fixed how hard a job is it ta

Have you tried flicking the button/knob instead? I've had to do it on all my cars as the tripmeters cheap plastic gearing gets easily damaged even if you careful depress the button. What that should do is to get it to engage on a good bit of the gear wheel, & then you can gently push it to zero, it may take a couple of flicks though.

If that doesn't work, then a replacement head is the only solution, i vaguely remember taking one apart, & its pointless trying to fix that bit, get a correct replacement speedohead, & swap the mileage barrels over, that part is very easy to do, remember to sellotape the current mileage on your correct one & then it will line up perfectly in the replacement speedo head.

Unless anyone can actually give details on how to fix it of course? i'm just going by memory here, so might be wrong.

The trip counter on mine is the only thing on the whole car that doesn't work - never has in my 5 years of ownership - so it's frustrating for that reason only. I did have a fiddle with it when the instrument pod was out last year but didn't do a full stripdown.

I should be fiddling with instrument pods again this year - if I get to working on the trip counter I'll try and remember to take pics.

I can only reset mine sometimes if it gets around to 100+ miles otherwise the button won't always go in

tried flicking it no good,spoke to previous owner,he changed the clocks for gti ones and has old dash so will get that and change speedo head over old one worked a treat he said,thanks for the advice everyone

have taken dash to bits,fairly easy and removed speedo to find when u push trip knob in the prongy bit that should push onto gears was behind it so pushed nothing,dismantled and put back together and now working,reassembly a bit harder than taking apart cos of my fat fingers but all ok now

my bodge on tripmeter lasted 5 miles before it stopped again,so out with dash again and swop speedo heads,put my mielage bit in it and now works perfick
