Gearbox oil

Post by Philip Chidlow »

I want to change the oil in the gearbox of the 19TXD and if I can't get hold of Total BV (which is a 75w/80 isn't it?) what would you lot recommend is the best alternative?

I've tried half a dozen alternatives to the Total gearbox oil, and none of them worked as well as the BV - even with additives.

One of them - a Comma oil if memory serves - basically switched off the synchromesh! That was fun - double de-clutching around the place until I could find some BV to replace it! Even then, it took a day or so before the Comma oil got washed out of the crooks and nannies of the cogbox and life returned to normal.

Never again.

Total products are not that easy to come by now, if you don't have a Citroen dealership nearby. They don't even sell LHM in their service stations around here

But as Richard RxBx pointed out (thanks for the tip) Peugeot dealerships might be an alternative source.

Yet another reason to move to France then...wine, weather, food, space, and better availability of Total products!

In the end I got some from Citroen. And Pug dealerships/specialists usually have some.

What is the correct procedure for changng gearbox oil? Might do mine on the valver this week. Do you have to warm up the oil 1st as per engine oil.

It helps it drain when it's thinner, so yes. It takes a little longer to warm up than the engine oil, so best done after a good long run.

Thought i'd resurrect this thread.

How often does the gearbox oil need changing in a diesel BX?

How many litres do i need?

There are 2 plugs that i remember, is there a diagram to show whereabouts they are & which one is the one to drain the oil & the other to fill up?

Do the plugs have a washer? If so, is it the same as the sump plug washer or is there specific size that i need?

Reason for asking is that changing gear isn't as smooth as it was, its getting a bit notchey so want to change the oil to see if that sorts the problem out.

This is the filler plug (well, at least it's been where I've been putting gearbox oil for the last 110k miles! )

Image

I change mine every 24k miles, which I think is the recommended frequency. Drain plug is at the lowest point, at the back of the diff housing near the subframe. They do have washers but I've always re-used the old, with no issues.
