steering ram end

Post by citronut »

customer bought his BX to me after MOT fail,

they failed it as the ram end was touching the lower suspension arm when the steering is locked to the right/O/S,

i found the bush in the end of the ram very oily, so i bought a new bush from citroen (yes still avalible as it also fit other/later modles )

ended up removeing the ram from the car to fit the new bush, the two feed pipes were so badly coroded i sourced a second hand pair before proseeding (should have failed the MOT ),

on closer inspection of the bush it wasnt that bad i s6till fitted the new one,

on reassebly the ram still touched the arm so the fault must be it the rack,

for the time being i fitted an 1/8th washer under both rack mounts to lift the rack up a touch,

strange thing is it gave the ram end about 3/8th of an inch clearance,

i did also advise the owner to have the tracking checked,

This is something I saw on a BX a few weeks ago, everything looked OK but one side of the wishbone bush was all shiny, the ram felt fine and couldn't see anything out of place, but never seen that before :?

i think it is down to the rack internals being worn alowing that end of the internals to drop, as the ram end is usualy very close when all is in good order,

it could obviously do with thinner washers than the two i used,
