LHM Leak - help

Postby richardmorris » 08 Mar, 2011 - 12:05
Hello all,
Have just had this email from my brother-in-law - anyone have any ideas for a source of the leak?

xantia playing up again!!!! Got the hydraulic fluid warning light again this morning and had to stop on the way to nursery. Got back and topped up the reservoir and then waited to look for leaks. Seems like there is fluid coming slowly from around the sphere at the front of the engine (reservoir sphere?). there is a black connector block under the sphere that connects to some relatively wide bore piping and the leak seems to be coming from around here. Looking at the drive it appears that it may have been leaking for a little while.

Any thoughts apart from a big bonfire?

Update.

Seems he's managed to sheer one of the pipe nuts when attempting to tighten them. Oh well. Seems the RAC beckons...

Hmmmm, sounds like he has scrapped the pressure regulator then! Thats probably where his leak was from. If he manages to get the bit of the pipe union out, there is a bit in my last Xm column about replacing the seal in the pressure regulator.

Having seen the pics I agree.

Mechanic is going up Saturday to see if he can get the remains of the thread out and put it all back again.

Well that last leak was fixed with a replacement regulator. BUT it seems the new one also has a leak, if a little slower.
It's coming from the end- arrowed in the photo.

Can this be repaired at all? it's a slow drip at the moment, so not yet catastrophic.

AND

if anyone is interested in buying the car let me know - one family owned, V reg 150K 1.8 16V stateside - engine, body and interior very good.

Hi Richard,

The seal inside the pressure regulator is the likely culprit, take a look back to one of the recent Xm articles in the magazine, it shows how to replace it.

We're already thinking of that - but rick can't quite remember where it is in the workshop (or which car it may be in)!

The base of the old one was rusty and pitted making a poor joint, but it wasn't leaking from the end.

I've just found that my 1998 TD auto has a leak from the end plate as in the second picture and I have been trying to find a diagram of the internals to see if I can repair it. I have a regulator/accumulator from a GS perhaps I could fit that?
Not much help for your problem just a coincidence.

there is an O ring in under the end cap and it can be replaced, but you will need to compres the spring that is in under the cap before removeing the circlip,

also there are exploded diagams of a regulator in earlier citroen BOL 's like the G, BX and CX manuals,

AEP do the spheres for 18.50, but its the accumulator itself, which I assume is also known as the pressure regulator.
I presume that because it is an accumulator sphere that fits to it then the correct part description should indeed be 'accumulator' rather than pressure regulator?? I can find several references to it being called an accumulator on several other web articles in connection with other Citroen vehicles?

The garage think it might be able to re-condition it if there is a repair kit for it but suggested that given it's 21 years old, it might be a bit of a gamble and I'd probably be safer getting a new or professionally re-conditioned regulator.

Unless anyone has a spare lying around, I think I'll check with Martin at Pleiades and go from there.

Thanks for all the posts, guys.

Just picked up the St Tropez from the garage. She is now wearing new spheres all round and a new regulator. Currently parked in pride of place on an unsullied bit of tarmac, just to tempt fate. :D  8)
