Speedo cable purchase

Post by Turbo Killer »

Since getting my BX i have used it as everyday transport, it hasn't missed a bit and i really enjoy driving it. A few days ago i got the clicking speedo syndrome at low speeds, yesterday the speedo gave up, before i start removing stuff i want to buy a new cable and replace it anyway, where is the best place to buy one from, is it the kind of part your local factor would be able to source?

Try GSF or AEP Direct. Alternatively try Malcom Lockwood tel:01274 640590. Regards Mark.

or ask a local auto engineering person to make a cable up.

Works out often quarter of the price.

Just checked on AEP's website they list both the upper and lower cables.

Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...

Warning I'm no expert but

I had speedo issues last year, the lower cable snapped on the way to the National. We suspected this but weren't sure. Vanny gave me a spare speedo and I bought a new upper cable for pennies at the show both are in my loft and yours for postage cost if you need them. I'm not on here masses so pm and wait :)

The lower cable can be replaced with a 2cv part which I bought from Martin Lockwood. This is the easiest bit to replace and apparently the most likely to fail so worth trying first.

To replace it

Find the cable as it comes out of the bulkhead, using fingers undo the top cable from the lower

run your hand down the cable to where it enters the gearbox

pull rubber pin out to release cable

replace cable with slightly longer 2cv item

worry when you realise how fast you've been driving since it broke

That\'s what they told me 12weeks ago, fecking hopeless that lot! I won\'t even bother wasting my time looking at their website next time, it\'ll be quicker and more successful to try and mil the new part out of iron ore.

Update.

Checked the drive ends of the speedo cable in the engine, they all seem to be fine, so i removed the instrument cluster to check the square end of the cable, this is fine and is perfectly square. I am now assuming its the speedo instrument itself, it was making quite a few clicking noises before it gave up completely.
Can these be repaired or is it a case of replacing it with a good secondhand unit?
Apart from the speedo, the car is running great :)

You can repair them, but I would swop it for a good used one. Worth changing any blown dash bulbs whilst you are at it too.
