Speedo Problem

Post by Ian_Fearn »

Hello everyone,

My speedo no longer works.....

Just to quickly set the scene, the speedo on my TZD Turbo has always been troublesome. For the first few years it was the typical jumpy needle but 2 years ago it gave up (in Spain of all places!).

It was the bottom cable that had gone. I replaced it and it promptly broke again. The replacement was a plastic version so I replaced it with a genuine Citroen one and did the upper cable at the same time.

Ever since this the speedo has 'clicked' very annoyingly so last weekend I stripped the dash thinking the cable was a little tight. Put it back together and now the speedo no longer works at all.

I've removed the lower cable from the gearbox and can make it turn at the top end so its clearly still connected and nothing snapped. My only thought now is that something in the box has gone.

I've driven the car with the cable connected to the box but with dash apart and the cable doesnt turn.

Its been a while since I stripped the box on a BX but I seem to recall a plastic housing in there which locates the square end of the cable.

Can anybody offer any divine inspiration???

Cheers, Ian

If you remove the white plastic housing on the gearbox (10mm head bolt) then hopefully you'll be able to see the problem. The only time I've had to do this was on a second hand 'box where the plastic gear wheel that drives the speedo cable was completely missing, which I would guess isn't a particularly common failure mode! I'm guessing it may have stripped.

Cheers Mat

Visibility is pretty limited in this area. Once i've removed the white plastic housing, will I be able to see the problem with the box in situ??

Depends what the problem is! If it is with the drive gear that fits on the white housing, then that comes out complete and should be obvious. If nothing is obvious I suggest jacking one wheel up, turning it and seeing whether the driver gear in the gearbox rotates. If it does then the problem must be with what you've taken out.

if need be it is possible to remove and refit the nylon drive gear on the diff that the speedo drive is driven by,

pull the O/S drive shaft out then undo the three bolts holding the drive shaft outlet in place,

remove the outlet then the nylon gear slides off,

Thank god i'm not the only one in that boat....

I've not had chance to strip it yet, following its hydraulic failure i've been using my Defender as the daily hack. I'll check it out this weekend and probably change the clutch too.

I've now discovered that the problem lies in the square drive between the lower and upper cables at the bulkhead disconnect.

I'm now trying to source replacement upper and lower cables. AEP direct are sold out (no still till November!), GSF dont list them, neither do Eurocarparts or Buypartsby.com.

Anybody know where I can get them from?? I'm making the assumption the dealer will charge through the nose for them (if they still supply them?)
