Front Height Corrector Return Pipe

Post by Ian_Fearn »

After years of completely trouble free motoring my TZD is finally throwing its toys out of the pram!

What I believe is the return pipe (thick rubber pipe) from the front height corrector is leaking. Its the one with a small jubilee type clip round it.

Has anybody got any advice as to the best way to attack this?

Access looks non-existant.

Access is just possible from underneath by contorting your hands into impossible positions or employing a child to do it. One of the problems is how the rubber melds to the nipple on the H/C and does need a certain angle to apply force/pliers to remove.
I did mine while the steering rack was out though driveshaft would probably give you access too?

if you can pull the pipe from the spout on the HC, use a stanley knife to slit the section over the spout, then cut it back to a good section of pipe and re/fit,

there is usualy plenty of slack on this pipe,

is there anything special about the type of rubber pipe used to connect these hydraulic components to the various plastic return tubes? Is fuel pipe sufficiently oil resistant?

Removing the driveshaft is a small job and makes everything behind the engine much easier, so I'd definitely do that. No experience on Turbo diesels, but I remember detaching the exhaust pipe on my XUDs as well when working around those corners.

Thanks for the replies.

The clutch has been giving me grief ever since I fitted it 2 years ago so i'll do that this weekend and sort the pipe whilst the driveshaft is off.

Changing the subject a little....

Being a landrover fan i've been researching replacing the clutch on my Defender and noticed the LR boys wont touch Valeo clutches anymore due to 'judder' when cold.

About 8 years ago I fitted a Valeo clutch to my 2cv and got terrible judder when it was cold. The same effects are seen on my BX also fitted with a Valeo clutch (2ish years old and done it from day one).

I've fitted tons of clutches to non-citroens now and only ever used LUK since and never had a problem with judder so i'll change it for a LUK one this weekend....

Any views on this?

a freind of mine runs a local garage he wont use ECP any more,

something to do with Padget brake parts made under licence for/by ECP????

that'd be Pagid ... I notice now more 'germanic' sounding names on parts - presumably to re-assure on the quality front.

I remember in Delhi in '97 I saw some really cheap motorbike helmets of the brand 'Hitler Sport'. For some reason that year there was quite a lot of Hitler branded stuff though no-one who was selling it knew who or what it was - just another word stamped on some crap items. My favourite was 'Hitler Handkerchief Perfume'.
A year later all the 'Hitler 'products had vanished!

The Valeo clutch came from AEP Direct so a reputable supplier.

Anyway, hydraulic leak sorted and also i've changed the clutch to an LUK one. I can confirm there is now NO juddering.

So for what its worth, in my opinion, dont automatically assume Valeo are the very best. This is about the tenth LUK clutch i've fitted, none have been any trouble.
