A bit of rust

Post by anaconda »

Our new 1.9 diesel has a bit of rust at the junction of the sill and rear door openings, adjacent to the plastic moulding, not uncommon apparently.

I thought id deal with this before it gets holed (its bubbling a bit on one side), or worse before it spreads to the sill. My intention is to get my local garage to simply weld a small replacement section of metal and ensure its sealed beneath the plastic mould. While theres an opportunity the inner sill could be rust proofed too, from the inside.

Does this sound like a reasonable solution?

This sounds good, although I'd try to check on the standard of the garages work before giving them the vehicle. While some do work that's every bit as good as much more expensive specialist restorers, others can be much more of the 'plate over the hole to get another MOT' variety, which while cheap and quick is not conducive to a long lasting vehicle.

I'd also make sure that you have enough funds to cover the possibility of the garage finding more work once they start cutting - the last thing you want is a half finished car that you can't afford to use.

The bloke I use welded a runaround we had a few years ago and based on that I let him weld my cherished DS chassis. As you say this has included finding other rot but I suppose thats the way these things are, and he seems to be a tidy worker. Happily he takes cash without the worry of VAT!

I cant really complain as this seems to be the only bit of rust on the car. Have really enjoyed being back in a BX these past few weeks....damn those lousy speakers though!!

Cheers

Put what out exactly?....not an issue, for obvious reasons!
