Waxoyl question

Post by KevR »

I've just discovered a 10 litre tin of Waxoyl at the back of the shed. God knows how long it's been there. The solvent has all evaporated off, leaving just the wax. I was planning to warm the wax to get it runny again, then re-dilute it with solvent so I can use it as normal. Any ideas as to which solvent? I was thinking white spirit as I have a feeling that's what it was originally, but if anyone's got any other ideas I'd be glad to hear 'em.

I used waxoyl on my old saab 900 and I'm sure the instructions stated that it should be diluted with white spirit and warmed preferably...
I remember the smell was pretty bad for almost a week though...

From what I've read waxoyl if not applied correctly can be much harder to use effectively and not very effective at all if not applied correctly although this could just be internet disinformation so we buy the more expensive other dinitrol / bilt hamber stuff...

I pulled my 5ltr can of Waxoyl out in the middle of winter last year only to find it had the consistency of embalmed frogspawn.

First I left it on the central heating boiler overnight (with the cap loosened) which neatly heated the can to about 40c, and solved the consistency angle. While this made it sprayable through my oilgun (I use a compressor setup rather than the Waxoyl handpump - it goes further into crevices) it wasn't going to stay that way of course, and would solidify on contact with the cold car, if not in the cold gun ..... hmmmm.

In order to KEEP it thin, I diluted it 25% with white spirit. This had the added benefit of adding 'creep' to the fluid - evinced by the filthy stuff promptly creeping every-sodding-where. But it was fantastic for the job intended and, although it took around a week to evaporate off completely (and made wherever I parked up smell like a decorators jockstrap for the duration) the stuff flowed out perfectly when 'wet' and hardened off nicely when flashed off.

A couple of tips. Put supermarket carrier bags over all brake discs. Waxoyl and friction don't coexist in the same time/space continuum .... just don't ask how I know this. Capisce? Merde!!!

Put a large tarp/sheet/blanket on the ground under the car. If you don't, you'll have a Waxoyl patch that will be very slippery in the wet. It was my Mother-in-law that found that out - so not everything was bad then .....

Wear a hat if you're spraying the stuff. If you get Waxoyl/White spirit in your hair, you may as well resign yourself to doing headstands in a bucket of Swarfega for several hours at a stretch. The stuff's designed NOT to come off. Unsurpisingly, it works! Again, don't ask.

Thanks chaps. Yes, I know about the waxoyl/hair interface problem. Been waxing/undersealing the MX-5 recently, and as it's up on the ramp, plenty of opportunity for brushing head on freshly coated surfaces....

Not sure if Waxoyl's as good as some of the other products, but since I've got it, I may as well use it. Can't do any harm. About to put the second TD estate on the road (it's been hors service for several years with a duff water pump and broken exhaust) so may as well take the opportunity to blast every crevice with wax. And then I'll do the car...

You can put the waxoyl on pretty much anywhere except brakes and exhaust.

In the end I heated up my solidified Waxoyl on a camping stove, then diluted it enough with white spirit so it would stay runny - worked a treat.
