Floppy wiper.

Post by Dollywobbler »

The windscreen wiper on the Mk1 threatens to start cleaning the bodywork when it rains. I'm presuming this is due to horrific spindle wear - also a problem on 2CVs. So, what do I do about curing it?

I guess I could seek out a replacement second-hand unit, but these days, that's as likely to have serious wear I would have thought. Can you get replacement spindles? Is it a big job to replace them? Needs sorting - I live in Wales!

I tried that, but then the wiper arm just lifted up off the windscreen and that was no use at all. I felt the car trying to pull towards other Citroens when driving as well. Just say no.

Pity it didn't work - I was going to forward thousands of spam emails where you could have procured the aforementioned requisite very cheaply. God knows what they think I want with it! :D

I keep getting links to websites that show many interesting and varied things you could do with it!

But back on Mr. Wobbler's floppy 'problem' - the guy on Anglesey has at least one complete BX so that might be worth a look. I did read somewhere on here about someone re-bushing the spindle too.

All the hinged links become worn over time.
If you take the whole unit out onto the bench it is possible to repair them.
I bought some brass eyelet kits. chose a size that was a bit tight on the spindle and fitted them. Then put it back together re peening the spindle as required. This lasted for about 2 years, when I re did it I used gorilla glue to stop it coming apart. I still may have the unit and I will be listing all my spares tomorrow, so it could turn up.

I've always removed the wiper arm got a thin brass sleeve that fits neatly over the spindle, coated the outside with 'plastic padding' and pressed it down into the muck alloy casting, once set it's as good as new. The spindles don't wear just the holes they run in.

This is the method I used.

Does get sloppy after a while, but frequently lubricate the shaft with oil from the top.
