19TZD Clutch Cable Question

Post by Tim Leech »

I went to change the clutch cable on the TZD today as the clutch is very stiff, when I disconnected the gearbox end and slid it back and forth it to judge how bad it was but noted it moved just as freely as the new one so no point in changing it.

Howeverr I noted that the bracket that comes out of the box itself that the metal spacer/adjuster pushes on too is very loose and you can wobble it around quite a bit and makes a noice, theres a white plastic cab on top of the gearbox aswell which is easy to remove, is this the oil filler?

Cheers!

Yes it is the breather and is where you fill the oil when removed.

Clutch cables will often move freely when unloaded but tighten up with the load on, it's the plastic sleave picking up/dragging like a brake.

Ok so maybe worth changing anyway? Mind you I just poked a hole in the inner wing so thats anothe job to do!

Is that bracket supposed to be be that loose, could it be the clutch fork?

Yes the clutch arm will move loosely until the cable is attached holding the realease bearing towards the pressure plate. without the cable on the movement is just the release bearing sliding up and down the shaft / trumpet.

If a new cable doesn't fix the problem it may be the clutch itself. Back when these cars were still fairly new there was a mention in Citroenian that a heavy pedal meant a worn clutch, and if left (because although heavy the clutch still operated ok) it could result in a broken clutch fork. I believe Citroen eventually beefed up the fork to prevent this.
