Magneti Marelli coil/distributor,

Post by Mike Holdstock »

Been a long time, with many smooth BX miles.
I have now a BX16i motor is a BDY, ORGA I think 5672, 1993 model. Apparently the coil/distributor unit has given up - power/signal going in on all THREE of the ingoing cables when the motor is cranked, but nothing coming out of the plugs. This is the unit with three ingoing yellow cables on one plug, 4 contacts for the spark plug cables, 2 coils (one for 1+4, the other for 2+3). No mechanical drive, one complete sealed unit.
Local (Swedish) scrappers database gives nothing - does anyone know where one such can be sourced in UK or elsewhere?

Thanks in advance

Seems to be the item mentioned on (my) version of Haynes on pafe 167 "Magneti Marelli system
Fitted to fuel-injected BX 16 models,
operation of this system is fully explained in
Chapter 4D.
On the ignition side of this system, the ECU
has full control. The ignition system is of the
static, distributorless type and consists solely
of an ignition HT coil with four outputs. The
ignition coil comprises two separate HT coils
which supply two cylinders each (one coil
supplies cylinders 1 and 4 - the other coil
cylinders 2 and 3). Under control of the ECU,
the ignition coil operates on the
“wasted-spark” principle, ie. each spark plug
sparks twice for every cycle of the engine,
once on the compression stroke and once on
the exhaust stroke.
OWNS a BX19i 1990 tri with only 110k km on the clock and no rust
OWNS a life-threatened BX16i and delighted with it (but poor relationship with test station)
HAS HAD 89 BX14iRE (dead)
HAS HAD 88 BX19GtI (dead)
HAD 89 BX14RE which was still motoring very well at 280.000km when there was too much rust (gone)
HAD about 5 GS (first 1978) in the 70's, 80's and 90's, loved them, would dearly have one again.
HAD a DS Break - Succumbed to the rust of ages..
