These Infra red plips are rubbish anyway.

They have such a short range, are unreliable and the cases crack up.

Best to replace with a new RF one.

You can get a tx and rx from CPC for about £25

or better still, fit an alarm and wire the central locking to that.

Thanks for all the info. In the back of my mind I thought it only had one battery originally.
Just to show my stupidity again(!) I cannot se any + or - indicators on it. I am assuming all these are the same design. This is the only BX i've had thats had one so I have no previous knowledge.

I think it was Defender who mentioned his remote only works when he gets up close to the rear quarter window, and points it at a precise angle towards the driver seat!!!

Not exactly 'remote' if you get my meaning....but its a BX , so its ok!

My plip broke up ages back. I was told that operating the central locking with the key also sets the alarm /immoby, but I've no idea if it actually does.

Not into electronickery but mine would work within 10 meters, as long as you aimed it roughly towards the receiver in the roof console 8)

That's got to be some sort of record for a BX , was it aftermarket if it had an imoboliser?

No record, mine does that too, as Phil infers it's got to be line of sight to the receiver sensor. If the range is less then the batteries are getting low. :D

No not batteries, as in previous threads on the subject not many get these sort of distances from IR plips. Is yours an original Citroen IR plip?

Yes it's original. I normally operate it within 2 to 3 metres on approaching the car but it will operate over the longer distances on a non-rainy day.

Incidentally, the plips have three sets of plastic retainers to keep the button cells in place so this age of BX plip was not meant to take a single battery.

The saga continues...

I've just had a look at my owner's manual to try and shed some light on things, and it shows this:

So whilst it may be possible that some versions had the 11A battery, it would seem that having 3 button cells is correct, at least for when this manual was printed (1993).

Well I've just wasted 99p on a new battery thanks to him, he owes me a new fob if I try the battery and it melts!

Got my 11A battery today, and with a mixture of fear and excitement () I cut the zip tie holding my fob together and put in the new battery.

Wow, what a result! I could open the car from the other end of the street!

Actually I'm joking. Range still the same at about 2-3 feet, but importantly it works - the movement of the battery cover with it zip tied together was enough to break contact between the 3 batteries.
