Post by Mothman »

Hi,

can anyone tell me the size of tool needed to so the sump plug? I am assuming the MK1s and 2s are the same? Would 8 mm be about right?

Thanks

Well mine has a square sunk head just under 3/8" which is 9.7 mil so 9 or 8 mil would be about right.
I just ground down an old 3/8" drive short extention, till it fitted
Works a treat

Post by bx petrol auto saloon »

Dear Andy.
Hi there Andy, glad to see you got Sophie running properly again.
I think I have complete set of adaptors to fit most sump plugs Andy,
I will have a shuffty in me toolbox tomorrow ok, your are more than
welcome to come and borrow it for a while to change the oil on Sophie.
I haven,t changed the oil on mine yet so I don,t know the size, but
I am pretty sure what sort it will be, and I know where the adaptors are
in me toolbox.
Ok I will get them out tomorrow, and then check it on my car, and
let you know on the forum tomorrow.
All the best.

Hi Vince,

many thanks for your kind offer, managed to source one for now. If it dosnt work, being too small, ile be in touch.
By the way, its always good advice to change the oil and all the filters and possibly the timing belt on any [new] second hand motor you buy. Ive always done it.

Andy

Dear Andy
That,s OK Andy anytime
I know what you mean, the oil and filter is on my TO DO list along a few other items aswell, at the moment I am just prioretising things so
that I get a better picture of the car, if you know what I mean
On the Cambelt front, I am trusting Chris,s comments that the BX
has a timing chain, it certainly looks like from my veiw aswell. which
is the same as my SAAB, she has a chain aswell.
Anyway Andy nice talking again and take care.

Hi Vince,

a timing belt not a chain, made from rubber/plastic and am told lasts about 7 years and very well worth doing.

Will be doing Sophie's soon then all is done. Will probably be doing the water pump too and all the rubber coolant pipes and a second oil and filter change soon. I will do this at least 3 times because of her age. She is running very well at the moment, thrashed her to Hadlow this morning, gave her a very hard run to see how she coped, admirably ime happy to say and re tensioned the HP belt this afternoon.

Hope to see you around at any local shows next year, best i can do for the moment.

Most BXs have timing belts Vince - if yours is an auto, it must be at least 1.6 which means it definitely has a belt!

And Saab's aren't too brill either. The chain was starting to get a little noisy on mine. The parts alone would have produced a bill of £400!

Hi Vince

Sorry Chris has told you wrong on that one (I shall slap his wrists when I see him), the only BX without a timing belt is the early 1.4 gearbox in sump type, all 1.6 petrols (inc yours) had a cambelt.

I would STRONGLY advise getting it and the tensioner replaced asap if there is a question over when it was last changed, its the first thing I do on any BX I have bought that I intend to keep.

A lot of people also change the waterpump at the same time as the cambelt & tensioner for peace of mind.

Sump Plug Tool.

Post by bx petrol auto saloon »

Dear Mathew and Tim.
Thank-you both very much for bringing the cambelt to my attention,
I had only whipped the top cover off of the cambelt housing today,
revealling the cambelt, and it certainly needs renewing, I have ordered
a new one with a new tensioner aswell.
But I have not got too far today, the engine mounting is still in place
etc. but I cannot see the water pump yet. Is it driven by the vee belt,
or is driven by the cambelt :?:
I will take everybodys advice and order a new water pump aswell, I
have not picked the parts up yet as I go all the to Aylsford about 15
miles away to the same place I have always been to as they all are so
kind and very understanding.
Well must shoot takes me ages to wrtite these messages.
Thanks again Matthew and Tim you are both most kind.
Vince.

Dear Dollywobbler.
Thanks again for your crucial advice :D
My 88 SAAB 900i has only done 69,000 miles from new, so not even
run in yet :) plus the fact she is only an 8 valve one, I wouldn,t touch a
16 valve for love nor money, as the 16 valves always eat timing chains.
My only brother lives near Barry, and one of my Uncles lives in Risca.
What part of Wales do you live then :?: and what cars do you run :?:
All the best and keep in touch please.
Vince.

Hi Vince

The water pump is driven by the cambelt and is tucked right down at the back of the engine. It's slightly above the crankshaft pulley. Access isn't too bad but use a trolley jack beneath the engine (with a suitable block of wood) as it helps to jack the engine into different areas depending on what you're accessing at the time (ie the angle is different if you're accessing the tensioner or the water pump).

I'm located in mid-Wales. Fleet currently consists of my trusty 2CV, wife's Austin Mini City E, a Rover 75 diesel tourer and, of course, the Mk1 BX estate project. I sold my Saab 9000 just over a month ago with 125k on the clock. Have previously owned a 900i 16v but didn't really get on with it. Was quick though!
