Here we go again!!

Post by encargado »

Oh well, all has been fine with the GTi 8v for some time now, give or take the minor MOT failure issues, but after standing for a week while test driving something else, it has now decided to get all grumpy on me again. Starts OK and will idle (just about) but as soon as it goes into gear, engine dies a death as if it cannot handle going under load. Checked out the all the electrics and all seems to be OK, just cannot get the thing to run sensibly.

As usual any assistance or suggestions, other than the one from my other half related to replacement, would be much appreciated as I would love to try and get the car back on the road for next week.

Try cleaning the air flow meter plug, and tightening the connections. Mine (although it is a 16v) was doing the same thing and it lead back to this plug.

I got it to idle, and when I touched the connector the engine cut out completely. I'd give it a wiggle when it's idling...

Although it could be many other things

It could be that your injectors are gummed up and the spray patterns aren't right (or missing) under different duty cycles.
They can be tested and internally ultrasonically cleaned on an ASNU machine. At the same time the filters, 'o' rings and pintle caps are changed for new.
When I had tickover/running problems I took out the injectors and got the local Lucas service centre to rejuvenate them and I was staggered at the performance enhancement it gave.
Lucas has gone now but a local Bosch centre may have an ASNU, alternatively there are some places posted here before that are online and you can send the injectors away to be serviced.

K-Jetronic is a mechanical fuel injection setup I believe, so no air flow meter as such. It should have a fuel metering unit, pressure regulator and accumulator though, which are possible candidates. Motronic is much easier to figure out though....all you normally need is a multi-meter

Dear Encargado,
I know it is not a Citroen, but when I first bought my 88 SAAB 900 8
valve injection 12 years ago with 60,000 miles on the clock, she would
not start unless she was on full throttle. The SAAB dealer fitted four new
injectors and new spark plugs as the faulty injectors knacker the plugs
too. some £ 320 lighter  the problem was sorted.
The car has now done 69,000 miles and thankfully hasn,t needed
anything since. If it doesn,t start first turn of the key without any
throttle at all, then with her it is usually the plugs.
Same system I think.
