I'm not sure about the early Mk2's, as said, they don't have the PCB and transistor that fits in the airflow. Likewise I found you could never get the blower to blow cold, it always seemed warmish.
But the Mk1 speed control I'm almost certain is all on the back of it's slider control.

Now I'm confused! From what Malcolm wrote I thought he meant that Ian's (being a later Mk1) had the same set up as Mk2s. Hence transistor rather than resistor control.
Haynes suggests the change to transistor control was in 1988 though, so the symptoms do fit with it being a switch (or resistor) problem.citronut wrote:it was only the very early MK1's that had the blower behind the dash, after that they were all the same MK1 & 2's in the skuttle below the windscreen
