alternator

Post by ace_the_bass »

driving home from liverpool last night and the battery light came on but the car was running fine. minutes later my radio went off and the rev counter stopped working. the car still drove fine but by the time i got home to wigan the headlamps and the dash lights were really really dim. got home from work tonight and tried to start it and there is nothing. I remembered an hour ago that a few days/ aweek ago the fan belt was abit squeaky. is it a case of just tightening the belt up, jump starting and we'll live happily ever after or could the alternator be goosed?! also i managed to do the top bolt on the alternator but ive got no idea how im going to slacken off the retaining bolt. any ideas?
thanks chaps

Have you checked to see if the alternator belt is still attached, mine just disappeared one day, no noise or anything, just the battery light coming on

Brushes went like that on a BX I had 10 years ago, bought new brushes and fitted them, and hey presto it was great again.

So if it's not the belt, get the alternator out and check the brushes.

Ref the retaining bolt (the big one that slides back, once it's off its thread), I use a long big adjustable to start it turning
