Exhaust fell off today

Post by Mothman »

The back box fell off the N/A diesel Estate today after a trip to Tun Wells, luckily just as i pulled into my driveway. Not bad use from it really, had the motor for nearly 6 years.

I have the replacement part all ready to go but is there anything i need to know to get the job done? What bits will i need as i havnt done a BX before?

I have the use[thanks Tim] of some tractor ramps so getting at the thing should be simple. :D

Check the rear hanger is secure and rust free on the rear inner wing/boot wall. this is a regular BX weak point and may well be the reason your box has fell off. They corode badly and come away, if it is still attached you might want to take this oppertunity to strengthen it or at least do some rust management. I would also check the state of the rest of the exhaust, there's nothing worse than putting a new back section on and then having to put a new mid or front section in a few weeks / months later. Much better to replace the complete exhaust. Also try and find original or OE quality parts as these are often 3 times the thickness of some cr-p after market exhausts which sometimes don't last much longer than the 12 month warranty.

I did the White One's back box a couple of months ago - ten minute job. No parts needed - I bought a spare clamp but the old one was fine. Both our hangers went and have been welded back on.

Dear Andy.
Really sorry to hear about the chimney Andy  My local parts
supplier AJAY,s in Aylesford wanted £ 180 plus VAT for the the last 3
sections of the exhaust on my BX Andy, and they still could not supply
me with a front pipe at all. :!:
I have a Fair size trolley jack and four axle stands not in use at the
moment Andy that you could happily borrow until you get it sorted if
you want. Handy if you have to do the front pipe aswell Andy.
My car is back on four wheels after doing the waterpump, cambelt
and a new radiator, and is running OK after all that. so I don,t need
my jack and axle stands for a while Andy.
All the best Andy.
Vince.

Hi Vince,

many thanks for your kind offer, i have access to some tractor ramps which will get the rear end right up in the air so ime sorted there.

Glad to hear your motor is back on the road again, all well and raring to go.

Best wishes
