Squealing HP pump.

Post by Rich »

Hi all.

Over the last few weeks the HP pump has started to squeal on the BX. I have checked the belt tension and that seems OK. The steering is also heavier and not as smooth as it was.

Is it new pump time???

The first thing to check is the belt, not just its tightness but also where it's running in the pulley.

If the sides are worn off and it's running on the bottom of the groove it will skid and squeal under load.

Thanks Gibbo. The belt is less than a year old and has only done about 7000 miles (that's why I checked the tension).

If it's squealing it still only points towards belt tension or worn belt. The pump belt does need to be very tight. A worn pump doesn't normally squeal unless it is physically locking up?

Tight enough that when you push on the belt, it should hardly flex/move :D

Exactly what the other Matt said (aka Mulley)

Almost no deflection, not like a normal belt.

I might as well jump on the bandwagon of Matts responding, and say I agree with the above too! As someone once said to me, it needs to be fu……erm…..fully tight.

That may be the problem.... There is about half and inch of flex in the belt.

That IS the problem, though you might also need to check it for glazing or oil contamination, talcum powder sometimes helps that
