I bought a genuine new cambelt set including idler pulleys etc. + waterpump from Citroen and that cost me £280 just for the parts.

I did the same for the 16v a few years ago, I ordered them without checking the price first!

Snap  but they were needed and I would have ordered them anyway as experience has taught me to have more faith in genuine parts, it was a shock though.

Yes & nothing wrong with Gates, they are a recognised OEM

Indeed, Mr "BX" Newbold recommends them too so good enough for me (or Preacher in this case).

The 8V GTI has a really large radiator, and a large cooling fan.
If all is working as it should, the fan should rarely switch on in the winter
and as Mat says, the temperature should be stable at around 90, controlled by the thermostat.
You should not need a second cooling fan on that car.

The system is well designed (except for the lack of a proper header tank)
so anything near 100 in the winter is a warning.

Unless the coolent looks really clean, I would flush it all through with a hosepipe. Antifreeze looses its anticorrosion properties after a few years.
But it is cheap, and a flush is an easy job. Well worth while.
