Post by Mothman »

Can someone tell me with what i remove the front seats of out of our K reg Estate scrapper? Got some typical frog sized bolt with a bloody large 6 pointed thread in the head, tool which of course i aint got. Can someone tell me what its called, size and where i can get one.

Why couldnt the just use a normal bolt?

Thanks

its a torx headed bolt,6mm I think. I used the torx bit in a 1/4 drive ratchet, they can come like a screwdriver but there isnt room to use one under the seat.any tool shop or motor factors should sell them.

T40 torx. Available as individual 3/8 sockets.

I think I managed to use the 3/8 socket on a ratchet if you slide the seats as far as they will go each way. There is a chance I'm wrong and you'd need a shallower type tool, but it's definately T40.

Having pushed the seats as far forward as they will go there is plenty of room as far as i can see. If not, mole grips ime sure will help.Plus the use of a big hammer!!

Thanks

Dear Andy.
I 2nd Kitch,s idea 3/8" drive sockets, they are stronger than 1/4" drive
sockets, they can break Andy, use a 3/8" drive breaker bar if you have
one first.
They do male and female Torx sockets, I think you may need male
ones Andy
All the best Andy.

They are a pain. I seem to recall a certain amount of swearing when I changed the seats in my TGD, though there was slightly less when a few weeks later I changed my mind and put the old seats back in!

There was some swearing Saturday when we decided to try and remove them but gave up before breaking into a sweat about it. Should be ok now with the right bit of kit. Hopefully it will be here by the w/end and ile whip them out.
Its the same with the sump plug i recently bought on feebay. 3 BXs, which one shall i keep it with as they all have independant toolboxes kept with each vehicle in case of breakdowns? And than i have to remember!! Getting older, grey cells not firing as well as they once did!!

You may as well invest in a set of Torx drivers - Torx bolts are everywhere these days and all over the place in later BXs. Basically anywhere there used to be an allen bolt or a cross-head screw. I don't mind so much for the larger bolts - they're less likely to round off than allen heads. But all the little trim screws are a right pain – you have to be absolutely square on to them to get any drive, and it's really fiddly.

I would hope that a breaker bar isn't needed to remove the seats!

That reminds me, I think I've mentioned it before but I remember having a job changing front seats in my Dad's Xantia...I found the front bolts incredibly hard to get at under the seat, no room for a Torx bit and ratchet. So I cut down a Torx bit and welded it to a rod, and removed the front bolts half a turn at a time. It was some time later that I realised if you just put the seat back on its runners there was loads of room!
