Chewed Rear Arm?

Post by DomRobinson »

Whilst changing the rear arms last year, I noticed that the vertical, outward face of the arm seemed to have some old damage caused by the head/shim of the pin which passes through the bearing tube - as if the bearing had collapsed in the tube in the past.
On reassembly, the new bearing races fitted perfectly into the tube - no sign of the tube 'ovalling', and the whole thing bolted together without further drama.
However, it still looks a bit knock-knee'd. Can't understand why - the horizontal pin passes through two bearings - the races fit snugly - where is this camber/castor coming from?
I have read the various articles on this site, and still can't figure it out... :?

There should be no effect on the bearing alignment, as long as the races fit tightly. However, the weather protection of the seals may be insufficient, if there's very much damage caused by the pin head.

I've been working on a method to fill the damages with nickel-rich welding electrodes, and then machine the holes to correct dimensions, but that project is currently on hold due to insufficient time and a generous reserve of un-damaged rear arms.
