Front Caliper Slider Pins

I'm in the process of re-conditioning an old seized brake caliper.

So far i've cleaned the caliper ultrasonically & removed the slider pins & ultrasonically cleaned them as well.

One was in decent condition, only a small amount of rust at the tip of one end. The other had much more rust on it, again at the end of the pin.

Is it possible to grind the rust out & re-use, or once they get rusty they are only fit for scrap? I wasn't sure if the metal was plated or whether it was solid?

Another quick question while i'm on a roll.

The rubber gaitors that fit over the slider pins were old & knackerd so i started to remove them, however, the rubber gaitor part which is inside the slider pin hole seems to be kinda stuck/glued in? Is it just old age & heat that causes the rubber to stick inside? & is there a way of removing it without causing any damage to the surface of the caliper where the pins slide in & out of?

The rubber is just stuck and once the slider pins are out should just pull away, as long as the pins are not bent or corroded so badly that they will not slide freely then clean and grease them.

They are just push in though over the years they do tend to glue themselves in. A good seal pick should clean out the guide channel.

did you buy a set of these?

Nope, not at that price :o I managed to buy quite a few box's of caliper repair kits one year for next to nothing inc some that had slider pins in them as well. When you add up the prices of all the bits that you'll need if you were paying the usual prices, its cheaper to pick up a new caliper off e-bay instead. Luckily for me i've got all the rubbery bits in stock so can renew quite a few seized calipers which i've also kept over the years, i hate throwing things away :lol:

Oilyspanner - One of th slider pins has a fair amount of corrosion on it, but its just at one end rather than on the main part of the body, so it might be ok? What i was thinking of doing was to grind the rust away, then somehow treat the affected area to stop it from re-rusting & then re-fit, but was worried that it would be a waste of time & would re-seize again?

I've spotted this slider kit which says they are for a Xsara's rear brakes, they do look very similar to the BX front's? Don't suppose there are any tech specs available to see whether these are identical? They seem a lot cheaper than the proper BX front kits, so would be worth doing at this price 8)

I normally wire brush any corrosion off and apply some nice grease, as long as there are no ridges or deep pits the sliders can last a long time, I recently took apart a nearly new Bendix type caliper, it was not particularly easy to slide along the pins and appeared to be lubricated with white Moly paste.

I've cleaned the pins with an altrasonic cleaner, its the ends of the pins that seem to have suffered & the rust seems to have eaten away the metal, the main part of the pins are in ok nick, just a few scrapes/marks, nothing too deep. I'll post up some piccies so that what i've said makes sense?

ask the seller if he can take some mesurments to see how they compaire,

I'm with Oilyspanner on this one. Wire-brushing or steel wool will remove rust, oxidation & hard crud that an ultrasonic cleaner will never touch. Ultrasonic cleaners are suited for cleaning light accumulations and degreasing when used with a suitable solvent.

Steel wool should nicely polish the hardened steel finish of these pins to get a better smoother sliding finish than that you will achieve in the ultrasonic tank. :D

Sorry you're wrong, i cleaned them & de-rusted them in the ultrasonic cleaner, so it does do heavy duty cleaning. I used seaclean to de-rust whilst removing the rest of the grease etc was done with fairy liquid as that works out cheaper. I'll pop up some piccies to show how they came out, should have done a before picture as well, but heyho.

I also de-rusted some nuts & bolts that looked well beyond saving & they came up a treat & i can actually re-use them now. Also de-rusted some wheel bolts as well :D

I've got plenty of 2nd hand bits that i'll be popping into the cleaner over time, so its going to get a hard life :lol:
