Yes Brian is quite right, I was looking at the wrong photo; The one with the pump still in the system.

Hi Boys , please play nicely when Im not around

ok a few facts and figures .

there is deffinately no round thingy on my car .

The mechanical pump was replaced in October 2009 at 106,261 miles

the car was run with this pump until the electric one was added in
July 2010 at 108,228 miles so the mechanical pump was used for 9 months and less than 2,000 miles.

The car has now done 110,300 miles so the manual pump has been bypassed for 19 months and 2,070 miles.
would that make it safe to use the mechanical pump that is fitted ,

no crud was found in the pump when I checked it today and by temporarily bypassing electic pump I found that the manual pump do's still work

/\ good stuff =D> \:D/

problem is you need "the round thing"
no definitive answers yet to what it is called and without a name for it, you can't get one. I've searched in google and ebay using "SOFABEX", found pumps but nothing else. I've tried other words like "petrol pressure regulator", "citroen petrol pump", and more that I cannot remember, no luck. I've also tried Peugeot 405 searches.

There is a Peugeot 405 GL 1580 listed here but I rang them up and they said those Peugots have now been crushed.

I would obviously like to get a round thingy if I can. But the car has been running without one using the electric pump and no tank return, so would it be any different running it with the mechanical pump and no tank return ?

From what you have said I recon Bob fitted a new mechanical pump to try and cure bad starting and when it didn't he tried an electric pump (in fact i'm sure he had the electric pump wired to a switch at one point and only used it to prime the system and had the mechanical one still plumbed in for normal use.)
Anyway could the original problem be the lack of this ''round thing'' which may be a fuel regulator / reservoir. If you refit one of thes in the system and reffir the return you may get the result you are looking for?

Kevan your short term memory needs a re-boot :!:

Way2go has already answered that here.

What he means is that the pressure out of the electric SU pump reduces as the flow into the carb reduces, so "the round thing" was no longer required, so they took it off and binned it. The implication of connectiong your mechanical pump direct to the carb without a flow return to the tank, is that the pressure to the float valve will vary with engine speed, and above a certain engine speed it will be too high so the float chamber may flood (the pressure will push the needle valve open).

I do not see why this was necessary, in my old British car, the mechanical pump supplies pressure direct to the SU carb, and there is no return to the tank. I suspect that the mechanical pump in that car behaves the same way as your SU electric pump does, so SOFABEX being French never bothered to emulate British engineeering. The mechanical pump and carb on my British car are now 60 years old and still no probs at all.

My mates Astra started running away, not on oil but through a faulty diesel fuel injector which decided to just inject as much fuel as possible, the engine would just rev upto the limiter & the most amazing amount of smoke billowed out  Modern diesels for you :x

Posted on the other thread but your answer
Way2go wrote:The point of this "round thingy" in addition to being able to deliver a good volume of fuel at low pressure is to prevent "Vapour Lock" which will be more prevalent on hot days and when idling in traffic.

Without the return line some fuel in the supply line can become hot enough to turn gaseous.
