N/A cam into TD engine - benefits?

Post by KevR »

Right, I might have dreamt this, but I seem to remember someone on here a while back fitting a 1.9 N/A camshaft into a 1.7TD engine, and claiming improved performance. Anyone have any experience? And would it be a straight bolt-in mod or would anything else need modifying as well?
Any advice gratefully received.

I did, twice on my TGD. I am promised it makes a difference, but TBH i really couldn't feel any change and i've done 20k on the original cam an 5k on the n/a cam.

All i can say is it certainly didn't do any harm to power or economy.

I'd consider them a straight swap if you need a replacement but probably not worth the trouble if you just feel like swapping.
I have zero patience for your tedium.

Thanks for that - I probably won't bother then! Got to do my valve clearances soon so I thought if it was worth doing, that would be the time to do it, but if there's no real difference I'll save the dosh for something else.

I had a look at the camshaft data and it seems the shafts for 1.7L -1.9L engines are pretty well the same up to 9/86 and different from 10/86 the difference being only in the increase in lift of the inlet cam from 8.8mm to 9.2mm

There are a number of painted ring codes on the shafts but they seem to relate only to the size of nominal or repaired shafts.

Where are you getting your shims from when you do the valves?

I've got a few spares already (and a spare engine to rob bits from), but they're freely available – cit or peugeot dealers should have them on the shelf as they're common to so many engines. I usually find once you start shuffling them around you only need three or four at any given time.
I've just realised though that this will be the first time I've done them on this car (TZD estate), after 55k+ miles of ownership and no knowledge of previous service history.
Also need to do them on the white TZD estate, which I'm putting back on the road after five years' lay-up. Can't remember doing them on that either, although I think they'd been done not long before I bought it, and I only did about 25k before the water pump went and the exhaust fell off and I parked it in favour of the grey one.
