Hi Mat! Thanks for that. The bodge job didnt work and now searching for a thermostat cover - till I get it I'm driving with the cap off to keep pressure low. Have just re-glued the hose on and will try your suggestion when I get water in it again.

I tried your test, Mat, but couldn't detect any hissing... I've managed to source a thermostat cover from a main dealer for £10.50 plus VAT, which will be coming in Friday. Once the system can stand being pressurised, I'll use the k-seal, and hope for the best.
I've only done about 12,000 miles since the new cylinder head and gasket was fitted, but it could have been sabotaged by the waterpump and/or the horribly clogged up radiator that I was using before fitting yours!
Does my idea of testing the waterpump by timing flow through the radiator sound like a good idea? All other tests I have read about for waterpump fault diagnosis can't be used on these engines.

well it looks as though the K-seal has worked! No more coolant being forced out of the radiator cap, no more bloated hoses threatening to burst...
I have only had it at tickover so I just hope the repair holds when the engine gets a bit more exercise..
now I just have to deal with the mysterious loss of dipped headlamp(main beam ok), since the time coolant was getting regularly sprayed around the engine bay...
Thanks to everyone for their input.

Have you got a spare heater tap? You'll probably need one in the next year or so!

Don't know what that is, Vanny, but if it's survived years of cooling system problems don't anticipate it going soon in the current relative calm. What happens when it goes?

I had a very blown head gasket on the diesel engine, after running it for 12 miles, towing another car with no coolant. I had to put 2 bottles of K-seal in to stop it. But it did another 2000miles without a problem.

Spoke too soon! K-seal fix didn't withstand a 5 mile drive, and the pressure's back...

When you've found the problem and fixed it - fill with antifreeze (which contains an inhibitor to prevent the kind of corrosion that causes water leaks) and distilled or de-ionised water - never tapwater.
That should be a sticky qoute somewhere :!:

Guilty of this myself withwith the issues I hae witht he TZS at the moment. One question though wold rainwater be better than tap water?

Given I am in the clean south pacific unless there has been a dust storm in Aussie our rainwater is still drinkable.

If the rainwater was stale, i would have thought that would be ok, otherwise fresh rainwater only marginally better than tap water which has treatment chemicals in it, but not as good as distilled water which is better than everything.

1.9td from a 61k 306 going in this week. Havent yet traced the ideal 1.9 non turbo camshaft, so might need to use the 17TZD one..
