Bosch pump settings & Knocky knock...

Post by JayW »

Does aanyone have a guide for setting up the Bosch pump? Mine smokes quite badly (bad enough for MOT failure) when pushed and is also not quite returning the MPG i'd expect. It starts and run's perfectly and doesn't use oil so i think it's just a bit on the rich side.

Secondly, i've traced the spurious rear-end knocking:

Those who are aware, the rear suspension cylinder (ram) is mounted into a circular plate in the subrame (with the metal pipe in the side and the sphere on the end). Now, when going over bumps my cylinder is knoking up and down in that plate (it's only about 2mm movement) which is causing the knocking.

So, there's nothing technically wrong with it and normally when under pressure the cylinder would be so rammed up against the plate it wouldn't move but this one's just being an arse.

I've tried wedging things in between the sphere and the subframe lip below it but nothing's working. Are bright ideas?

Cheers.

found you the bosch pump bible, on tother side. It's pretty detailed about construction, less so on the practical side of actual tuning.

Is it not all in the 'Diesel' haynes?

EDIT

To answer my own question there is a section on 'Fuel Injection Pump (BOSCH) - Checking the adjusting and static timing on page 96. (Grey cover, book 1379)

ANOTHER EDIT

Found the PDF's for the Diesel Haynes, have put it on the BXP and posted a link to it on the other side.

I've never heard of the rear cylinder knocking against anything, seems a bit strange, has the circular plate been damaged or isn't in the correct position? Or perhaps the cylinder might be out of position? The only other thing i can think of is that its the wrong cylinder fitted & therefore the fit is wrong?

There appears to be nothing wrong with any of it. I too have never seen this issue, hence it just being an arse because this particular car just hates me i think

Bosch pump settings knock knock.

Post by bx petrol auto saloon »

Dear JayW.
I know it sounds crude, but if you were to jack the car up and put
the car in low, so that the suspension cylinder is not under pressure. and
then warm the part of the subframe with a welding torch, and gently
apply a hammer to it, whilst it is hot, and then allow to cool : That should
sort the problem out, I would have thought
I hope this helps

The plate is inaccessible with the cylinder/sphere in situ and i'll be buggered if i'm gonna take it all out for the sake of a knock that goes away above 20mph. Besides, the plate isn't bent, it's just my hole that's slack
