Mk 1 rear seat belts

Post by Mothman »

Sophie only has one rear seat belt for the passenger side. Should there be two? I have a rear set from the scrapper if neccessary.

Would have thought there should have been two for a vehicle registered in 1986. That year is the cut-off for rear seat belts. Before then, not needed. Presumably it should have a centre belt as well. My estate has three belts.

Don't quite understand the question, but there should be one either side and a lap belt in the middle.
I have zero patience for your tedium.

Never seen a BX without them to be honest, but as Sophie is an Italian Spec car I imagine they have different rules. Mind you do Italian drivers use such things, and traffic lights, and give way signs......

I imagine it's had some fitted if it didn't already have them and then had two removed. They can't fail an MOT as not functional if they're not there (and if the car doesn't need to have them due to it's age).

Well if it's an '86 C reg, surely it could be before the cut-off point?

Hi Kitch,
I tend to agree with you !
RoSPA wrote: 1987 Rear seat belts required to be fitted to new cars.
The /\ quote from THIS PDF for ref. !
RoSPA wrote:1989 Wearing rear seat belts becomes compulsory for children under 14.
1991 It becomes compulsory for adults to belt up in the back.

But I don't how the /\ would apply if there not fitted and not mandatory to retrofit ?
Like it was to the front of vehicles manufactured in 1965 and onwards, which had left the factory without them (Before that was mandatory by the vehicle manufacturer) !

As I can remember helping my father having to retro fit a front set to his 'Vauxhall 101 Super' !
There was nothing ever super with any Vauxhall's then or even any to this date IMHO, as the build quality was extremely poor (Compared to other mass produced cars) and it was going as rotten as pear only after 18 months from been manufactured :(

Interesting. I always assumed the cut-off was 1986 for some reason, but it appears to be 31 March 1987. In that case, I'm taking the belts out of the back of my Mk1 (replacing them is way down on the To Do list as they don't operate correctly). I've never had to carry anyone in the back and if I do need to, I could always choose another car. Conveniently, I'm swapping the interior over at the moment, so an ideal opportunity to get the belts out.
