Cutting Out Mystery

Post by hvanman »

Something strange has happened twice now to the 17 TZD that maybe someone has some idea's on??

On approaching a junction and down changing, while the clutch has been down, all the lights come up on the dash and the engine stops.

Letting the clutch up to jump start it, or stopping and using the key results in the engine starting straight away. (this happens while maybe still 10m from coming to a full halt)

It has only done it a couple of times in several thousand miles, but is a bit worrying in case it happens at a time when acceleration is then quickly needed....

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Thanks, Simon

I had a strange cutting out problem caused by the engine loom connector being pulled slightly apart,(oblong one below the battery ) a spray of contact cleaner and a push cured it, weak engine earth is another possibility.

I once had a Lotus Europa that stalled every time you pressed the clutch, that turned out to be worn crankshaft thrust washers that allowed the crankshaft to be pushed forawrd each time you pressed the clutch.

It's strange that it only happens very rarely, but I will check that connector. ( I guess it only happens on odd occasions when the clutch is down and there is no throttle opening..)

Is your tick over a bit low when warm?

The tickover speed seems fine. It does sometimes "hunt" a bit before settling to a smooth tickover.

I have not come across an anti-stall device before (always petrol before), I have the Hayes B.O.L so will see what it says, although any extra advice would be welcome.

Thanks.

It's a small damper which slows down the 'throttle' arm on the pump as it reaches the stop at idle. It's not always present, but I don't know whether some engines were never fitted with it, or have just been removed.

+1 for that - on the roto diesel pumps there are two actuator arms on one spindle on the belt end of the pump, and these should be able to move independently. If they stick, for whatever reason (rust, dirt etc), the anti-stall device doesn't work, so if the revs drop very suddenly, the motor stops. I think Haynes covers adjusting it reasonably wll, but first check that the arms are free to move otherwise adjusting won't do much!

Well the top lever of the two was a little stiff, so I have lubricated and will see if that fixes it, but it only happens rarely, so may take a while to know for sure...
