Automatic Transmission Fluid change.

Post by bx petrol auto saloon »

Dear All.
I am looking to renew the Automatic Transmission Fluid, in the
gearbox :?: at home
I am O.K with having to remove the bottom pan, to drain the old
fluid out. I am pressuming that the gasket will be a rubber one with a
metal baffle plate inside that can be reused satisfactorily :?: and I am
O.K with filling it all back up again
I wish to use to use the best Citroen A.T.F to do the job with, but
there appears to be a few different makes of oil, like Esso and Mobil.
out of those two I would prefer the Mobil. But I don,t want to buy the
incorrect oil, made for say a C5 or a C6 :?: which they would sell me
if I was to call in and ask
My nearest dealer is quite a way away, and doesn,t reply to e-mails.
so I was wondering if anyone could let me know of the part number
for the correct spec fluid please :?: As I also wish to get enough oil to
do one change of fluid now, and enough left over for another change
in the future  However if A.T.F is " hydroscopic " as in if it
( absorbs moisture ) then that maybe not such a good idea :?:
Thank-you very much indeed, for all your help and advice

The manufacturer is not important but is must be Dexron 2. Other specs like ATF and Dexron 3 are NOT suitable for the correct lubrication and longevity of the box.

Automatic Transmission Fluid change.

Post by bx petrol auto saloon »

Dear Way2go.
Thank-you so very much indeed, for your very kind advice
I need to go to my local dealer after Easter, to get 20 x " Self
Exploding " white interior door panel clips, for my daughters Saxo and
I thought I would get enough automatic transmission fluid to do my BX,
her Automatic Saxo and get enough to change mine again in a couple
of years time maybe :D I find these days, I do like to have a spare,
escpecially of things like that :) Like oil and filters etc. etc.
Thanks again so much, and I hope you are having a good Easter.

I managed to get some correct spec from my local factors when I had the fluid changed on my TZi, I have heard stories that the gerabox goes BANG in a big way if the correct type isnt used though!.

As the "box" is shared with quite a few other cars it should be readily available.
Lots of Motors, mostly semi broken....

Automatic Transmission fluid change.

Dear Tim.
Thank-you so much for your very kind reply Tim
My local factors that I use, is further away than the dealer is, so I
also need to get 20 x New " self exploding " white interior door panel
clips for Nats Saxo, and to change the A.T.F on her Saxo automatic
aswell Tim, and I want to have enough A.T.F left over to do another
fluid change on the BX in a year or so time
I couldn,t remember the name of the stuff though, but Mr Way2go
has very very, kindly let me know that it should be Dextron 2
otherwise they would have sold me anything, like A.T.F for a C4 or a
C6
Many thanks to you both though Tim

I thought dextron 2 was no longer available and that the next detrons met all detron 2 criteria so you can go backwards with dextron 3 & 4 etc. but not forwards with dextron 2?

Dear All and Kevan.
Thank-you so much for your kind comments too Kevan
I was confused already thanks Kevan :? One thing is for definate,
I will be really really careful, to make sure I get the right stuff, before
I hand over my very very hard earnt money
I rang the local dealer today at noon only to be told the partsman
wasn,t there at the moment, what was I after :?: so I said some parts
for a Saxo and some parts a BX. Gave her my phone number, she said
he would ring me back :( couldn,t even be bothered to ring me back
If they don,t contact me tomorrow, then I will go to my not so local
factors, I am always welcome there :) plus one of the guys I know
there used to be a Citroen mechanic, he worked on BX,s
Thanks again Kevan, for all of kind advice  and I will get the
right stuff from the right place.
All The Best.

You can still get Dex 2 from German and Swedish, you should only use the right stuff!
I don't know if the article is still around but our illustrious (now sadly departed ) aussie Alan wrote quite a lengthy diatribe of the changing of Auto fluid and the reasons for not using the later fluid.....apparently its not the same stuff at all.....and not backwardly engineered.
He also talked about the fact that you will not get all the fluid out under normal circumstances as a proportion is retained in the gearbox. However you will have changed around 75% of it (sorry if this is not totally accurate but its from memory and I was only interested as I have an auto diesel and was looking to change fluid on mine) I did carry it out some years ago now and think its probably about time for another.
Hope this is of use and just to reiterate Dex 2 is not the same as Dex 3.

The Dexron 2 v 3 argument has raged on for years with no conclusive outcome. It has been a never ending thread on the Mitsubishi forum i'm on. Dexron 3 was certainly supposed to be a direct and IMPROVED replacement for Dexron 2 which saw several upgrades itself before dexron 3 was released. Genuine licenced Dexron II hasn't been available for years as hasn't Dexron III but if you can still find a Dexron II equivalent you would probably be best to use this to eliminate any doubt.

A bit of history here;

I think that the outcome of the thread by Alan was that you should use Dex 2 if you can get it ( this was a few years ago probably a little easier to come by then) he certainly thought it made a difference. Of course the new improved Dex 3 might now be ok but I can only go back to that thread.....someone on here might remember it or be able to find it .....it may even have been on the old French Car Forum. I can only vouch for the fact that when I changed mine even after changing the fluid it was still a bit grungy but not as much so it obviously doesn't all drain out....I seem to remember that they actually took the g/box apart and there was still a good amount remaining.

Automatic Transmission Fluid change

Post by bx petrol auto saloon »

Dear Mike.
Firstly so sorry for my late reply  But thank-you so much for
your very kind and invauable advice. :D I managed to locate
some dextron 2 at my local dealer, but unfortunately is was very expen-sive  So I have managed to locate some at my not so local factors,
where I get all my stuff from :) and I can get twice the amount from
the factors, than I could from the dealer Mike, for the same money.
When I used to live in Lincoln, I was lucky as there used to be a
G.S.F in town, so I use to go there quite alot, but I dont, know if there
is on locally  That is why I had to buy my spheres from G.S.F in
Birmingham :)
Anyway thank-you again so much Mike.
All The Best.
