Power Steering problem.

Post by YorkieG »

Hi to all members out there.
Could someone please help me???
My problem is the power steering efficiency is very poor, it feels as though it is sticking at times when turning.
I have bled the hydraulics (lock to lock).
there was a stiff track rod end (just changed both).
On test drive power steering still very poor.
Hyd pump etc all ok it just seems to be the steering.
can someone give advice, and does someone have any good spares to enable changing.
Please help :(
Many thanks Geoff.

Howdy. PAS problems are usually due to a weak pump or a Flow Diverter Valve that's clogged. A change of fluid may improve things (if this hasn't been done recently). Mine has this problem and I've not entirely worked out of it's pump or FDV yet. It is quite slow to rise, especially on tickover, so pump is looking like my chief suspect.

I'd agree with the above, first port of call should be a tired HP pump, the system is designed to close down progressively first sign is power steering then suspension and finally the brakes.

Thanks to you both.
Pump fairly new purchased from A reliable source (GM) so i think that should be ok.
Raise times good, tick interval 25-30 seconds,
Can you suggest next stage ????

i would say first port of call would be pump belt tension, secondly check for dirty tank filters,
then move on to more complex theories,

The cheapest option after checking the pump belt tension is to remove all the lhm, clean the lhm tank out & the filters & re-fill with hydraflush. Run for 1-2k & if that doesn't improve anything then its either the fdv or the pump (regardless of whether its newish/re-conditioned). Fingers crossed & keep us updated on how you get on & if anything changes/improves.

I've had two bxs with this problem, the steering would lock hydraulically when going around roundabouts or sweeping bends. I always thought it was the pinion valves that were faulty? Both cars were very high mileage and were scrapped without this problem being fixed. (after being extensively stripped)

powersteering fault

Thanks to all responses.
Belt tight.
I will strip and fit a repair kit to the FDV.
As suggested i will drain all lhm.
Clean tank/filters etc and fill with hydroflush.
After that it is a case of wait and see????.
Thanks again to all.

I've had exactly these symptoms on a very neglected BX I was given recently.. very slow to rise, intermittent stiff PAS until all warmed up..

I recently drained the very dirty and old LHM, cleaned the tank and refilled with the flushing fluid and so far no heavy steering... definitely worth trying this first as the hydraflush is cheaper than LHM!
