Rear caliper bleed nipples

Post by Paul296 »

I need to buy some new bleed nipples for the rear brake calipers. Trouble is I haven't got a clue which size/type to buy. Can anyone help me out?

Paul worth trying your local main dealer or a motor factor. The bleed nipples will be a generic type.

Did yours shear or are you afraid they will when you bleed the brakes?

If you're really careful they should be ok... I used alot of penetrating oil and a good hex socket and they both unscrewed fine..

I (well when I say 'I', I mean MULLEY!) managed to get them off this time, but we thought it might be an idea to have some in reserve just in case they do shear off - in which case we'd be up shit creek without the proverbial means of propulsion. :( ( :D )

When they do shear off, then they are pretty well amalgamated then you have to remove the whole caliper and tap out a new thread for the new bleed screws. I did this but then I was slightly concerned about the exact depth of the tap and the effectiveness of the seal.
Has anyone done this with a good result?

I ended up overhauling and fitting some other calipers I had lying around so probably better carrying a couple of spare calipers if you're worried about 'the proverbial means of propulsion!

( but then you've got to be a bit worried that the brake pipes will undo as well.. if you're swapping calipers and so on and so forth til you've got a pile of bits and a green puddle. This is why my 16v sits on bricks!)

So it might be a good idea to fit new ones anyway (assuming you get the old ones off without shearing), if the old ones are looking a bit suspect? That way you'd avoid having to replace the caliper?

I've asked Paul to buy some new one's, this is so that we can replace the one's that i've had to chew up to get them to actually move as they were in rather tight. I'll copperslip up the new one's to hopefully avoid them from seizing in the future.

Has anyone got the dimension sizes for the rear bleed nipples, just incase we can source some slightly cheaper one's as Paul is going to need 4 & i'll also need 4 myself for both of my cars, so if we can save a few quid then we can try :D

Malcolm, how come there are 2 listings with different prices?

I carry a pair of spare rear calipers too - When I changed the rear discs and pads last rear when doing the arms the bleeds screws came away easily but the brake feed pipe wouldn't. The thread had been stripped / forced at some point - When I have to get home for 5 I've learnt to carry lots of spares!
