1.9 XUD Cambelt Change

Post by Tim Leech »

Cambelt swop today on the TZD, my trusty mechanic at work is doing it for me as Mr Newbold is still adsent (and ignorning my calls).

Martin has done about 8 cambelts for me in the past on my BX's (inc 16V) but they have all been petrol, is there anything special on a diesel to worry about?

Thanks.

Not really, with the injector pump it's similar to a petrol engine with 2 camshafts! Just make sure any slack is on the rearmost belt run (which has the tensioner in it).

and just peg the cam, diesel pump and flywheel,

i use a length of 3/16th kunifer (copper brake pipe) to peg the flywheel,

then if you crank the engine before removing it you can still yank it out    ,

the hole for pegging the flywheel is behind the starter motor

and i use three bolts for the cam and pump sprockets

I'd do the water pump while you're there... not expensive to buy and really annoying when it starts to leak 6 weeks after doing the belt!

Check tensioners too but they're pretty solid and last well compared to the plastic ones some manufacturers use.

The first time I did my TZD belt I ended up taking the starter off as it was hard to find the flywheel hole - It's an odd size too - I found a 7 or 8mm drill bit with some tape wrapped around was a nice tight fit with no play - I like Malcolm's idea of the brake pipe in case you're in too much of a hurry..

Water pump is leaking so being changed (its on the ramp waiting for the part), I bought new tensioners too, its a "gates" cambelt kit, which was reather pricey!

All done, and the new clutch is in! 8) Drives superb, clutch pedal is lovely and light, no judder or slip, although its a wee bit high so I will tweak it down. Rev counters a bit wayward on tickover dances around a bit, but fine when it gets under way so some adjustment is needed.

Just the GAPING hole in the inner wing to do next.

France here we come! :D

One less thing to go wrong I suppose, one worrying thing is the amount of water I put in recently, I think it's had an airlock made worse by fitting of s new water pump. The low level lamp came on and I got nearly two litres of water in! Oils clear as is the water and there no bubbles either since I bled the system. Going to flush it tomorrow and do the Antifreeze and LHM too and fingers crossed it was just air.

Yes and it's bx shaped!! Just worried the TZD is going to be not as reliable as I hoped, tbh I wish I hadn't bought the f*cking think as its been a money pit, made worse by the clutch/ ken fiasco. serves me right for not looking at it myself thoroughly before taking it on. One things for sure when I get home from the challenge (hopefully in it) I'm cutting my losses, by which time someone will get a very sorted if slightly tatty example.

I've just finished night shift 5 out of 6. Knackered, but all funds for the Challenge. The valver is all fully fettled and ready to go(everything crossed). Off to bed now. I'm sure the oil burner will be fine(just take out a really comprehensive breakdown cover)!! :)
