I might look into this a bit more, the missus being a chef (no not a cook) has a source of used cooking oil which she probably can get FOC. Only snag its about 20ltrs every couple of months.JayW wrote:I've heard talk that the economy is only slightly affected, about -10%.kiwi wrote:Ok I'll bite
So when the price is right how good is the fuel consumption on veg oil compared to Diesel?
Does the cost then per mile work out cheaper on veg oil?
Cost would depend on where you get the oil. In the UK we used to be able to buy 3lt of veg from supermarkets for around 80p a litre but in the last 3 years that's now up to around £1.35 almost entirely due to the use in cars and the greed of the manufacturers cashing in on it (yes, a small part is due to increased transport costs). Whereas only a small minority use it for cars, everyone has to pay the inflated price so they're really coining it in!
That can go straight in your tank diluted with diesel.
If you're using old oil then it'll either be free or you'll pay the kitchens whatever you agree, but you'll have to process it. A very simple system can be knocked up with northing more than a large clear vessel (such as a dustbin or brewers vat), a few easily obtainable plastic taps and a couple of other odds & sods costing no more than £30-£50.
Comparing the running cost between the Diesel and the Petrol BX works out as a saving of 10cents per kilometre, which included the Crazy Road User Charges working out at 4c per km. Modern Garmin GPS systems have a solution to them however the penaltys are being revised to stop such fraud
10 cents = 5 pence per KM or 8 pence per mile! That is what I save as a BX diesel owner however I get screwed an extra $130 (65 quid) per year on the road tax. So realistically the first 1,300km per year is not a saving but given the TXD has done 8,000 miles in the 6 months I have had it then I am not crying about that.
It is useful to know that when we go on a long haul shopping trip that the cooking oil can be thrown in the tank at a push
