Tips for TD rear heater hose replacement

Post by themildbunch »

The longer one of the braided heater hoses is leaking now on my TD - This hose goes around the top rear of the engine behind the HP pump to the lower port on the heater tap on the bulkhead - all fairly inaccessible when you first look at it...

Should I attack this from underneath or remove the lower engine mount and pull the engine forward a little?

is this the one from the header tank the going atound the back of the engine,
if so i lays on the inlet manifold along the back of the head, then the other end atatch's to the water branch the the bottom hose conects to,

i have just re/fitted this very hose on Andys (mothman's) TZD in situe,

as i forgot to re/fit it whilst i had the engine out,

i fed the hose in from the HP end of the head/inlet manifold,

it helps if the are disconnected just above the cam belt, this helps when squeezing the hose down the back of the engine at the cam belt end,

then i removed the bottom hose from at the engine end this gives you access to the braided hose and clip,

I've just done it on mine too! I did it all from above, apart from the heater tap connection which I did with an extension bar and UJ from the wheelarch. Intercooler and battery out, and I guess removing the lower engine mount would help.

In that case I don't think it's the same as the OP, as his is the one going to the lower port on the heater tap. Either way I find it easier reaching down from above and scratching my arms to shreds, than lying on my back on the ground and getting dirt in my eyes....decisions decisions!

You have to hope that whoever put the pipe clips on last thought about the best orientation of the fastener head for access.
