Ball Joint Splitter

Post by Dickster665 »

Could someone please advise whether this tool is suitable for splitting the ball joints of a 1985 Citroen BX19GT. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/160688380972 ... 1438.l2649

Thank you.

That looks as though it'll do the job, unless it's really miniature! No dimensions specified. I used a similar item for the bottom ball joints once.

Last time I just used a piece of scaffolding to lever against the arm then popped the ball joint out with a sledge hammer.

They work but you have to use them upside down and remove the brake discs first.

Thanks chaps I appreciate your assistance. I have ordered one of these tools so I can see how difficult a task I can make out of changing a ball joint. I have also ordered the ball joint removing tool and a 35mm deep socket (3/4" drive). Is there anything else I will need?

Cheers

You'll need a strong, well mounted vice if you plan to use the ball joint socket for cracking off the BJ. You may find it easier to do the initial loosening on the car with a chisel and hammer, but then again corrosion should be less of an issue down there!
Don't forget that the BJ is peened over in a couple of places to prevent loosening, so needs to be unpeened before unscrewing.

The brake discs can remain in position, if the strut is first jacked to horizontal position:
