Speedometer Noise

Post by kiwi »

Checking this before I go into a panic over trying to find a replacement speedo in New Zealand in Miles (we use KMs).

This morning got about a mile or so from home and the speedomter started making that good awful screeching, slowed down to confirm it was the speedo and it went but few seconds later back again.

So pulled over and disconected the speedometer (in the dark I add) at the join in the engine bay and now realiant on the GPS.

Could live with just the GPS only here we pay a Road User Charge on Diesel and getting pulled without a speedo in a Diesel is a big fine. Next to panic over finding one with miles to replace is as Kms are 1.6 more than miles.

Fixable issue or not?

Should add at the time it was -2c dry and frosty so can only assume this is a problem realating to cold as well?

if you whip the head out, you'll probably find the lubricant has turned to a sticky near solid mess. You might recover it with LOTS of 3 in 1 oil, penetrating oil, whatever light machine oil you can get into it really.. Although usually once they start screaming it's the beginning of the end sadly..

Yeah, I find it really spoils the mood

Sorry, back OT. I wonder if some contact cleaner would be better to remove the sticky old lube? Then followed by something like silicone spray...thoughts?

never get that far myself!

Oh, yes, forgot to mention that cleaning out as much gunk as you can is a good thing, not tried silicone spray, but since it's stable over a very wide tempertaure range it should be perfect!

Thanks for the tips.

After running a day without it (cold mornings and evenings) I reconnected the speedo in the warm part of today and its working without an issue.

But in saying that if its due to athe temperature range then I will be whipping it out at my earliest opportunity to clean it.

Getting in with some preventative cleaning may prolong its life. I sure hope so as swapping a speedometer in a Diesel Car in NZ is not any easy task from the paperwork side of things and trying to avoid that means sourcing a Miles Speedo and thats hens teeth chance of sourcing here.

If you do find the correct replacement speedohead, its very easy to take the mileage barrel out of your bust one & substitute it into the new head, so it'll show the correct mileage & avoid the issues you mention 8)

Yes I am already familier with the barrel swaping to maintain the corect mileage. The problem will be finding one will MILES on it here.

Might have to try Flee Bay and convince my brother to get it for me and send it out. Failing that have couple of speedo heads in Kms just that is the complicated bit it seems.

I thought the speedo display information was a sheet of platic which was glued on, can't you just steam it off & put on the replacement head?

should have thought getting a head from France wouldn't be too hard?

It's an absolute ballache to remove the plastic sheet, well actually, it's easy, but getting the needle off and back on is near impossible if you want it to read accuratly after!

Score!!! 8)

Phoned up my source up country and just came in a few days back a BX with a MPH speedometer. Distance recorded within the current range of mine (slightly lower) so that is a score at $40 (20 squid) plus postage.

Lucky really the thing after I cleaned it was screaming like a banchee!!!

Fixed [-o<

After the last couple of cold mornings and the banchee wail from the speedometer it has now ben replaced.

Good result now is the error between actual and displayed has closed from 10kph to 4/5kph, so within normal tolerances for speedometer. Had a narrow escape during the calibration test drive! Just after clearing a corner after testing what 70mph displayed was. Parked at the side of the road was mr plod looking for a donation  that was my planned 100kph displayed check point

I cheekily pulled up behind him and asked if he could spot check me, hence the 4/5kph error. He claimed 5 I claimed 4 and we both agreed that 1kph GPS error was close enough between his gear and the GPS. 8) As an afterthought this ask was very brave of me given how tampering with speedometer is seen with diesel vehicles over here and the traffic cops are the
