valve clearances

Post by barry badger »

I've removed the cylinder head from the 4x4 and had it overhauled at a local head shop with the brief to do whatever it needed. They rang me to say it just needed the exhaust valves and guides replacing, stem oil seals and a light skim, the inlets were fine. I got the head back, the bill was £55 less than I was originally quoted because the inlets didn't need doing. On checking the head I found that the inlet valve clearances were between .28mm and .30mm. According to my 2010 autodata the inlet valve clearances for a d2f engine should be between .15 to .20mm. I queried this with them and they said years ago citroen had released a bulletin to increase the inlet valve clearances because of a problem with burning out inlet valves. I'm not convinced. I know it will run fine with these clearances but I want it as perfect as it can be. Has anyone heard of this increase in clearance size?

Not heard anything official, but the general advice in the 2CV world is to run larger valve clearances than originally specified due to the higher temperatures that unleaded fuel burns at.

Incidentally they have set the exhaust clearances to .35mm which is at the bottom end of the .35 to .40mm clearance autodata lists, which conflicts with the increased inlet clearances.

That does seem odd, as it's the exhaust valves that are most at risk!

My feeling is they have got too much work and are cutting corners to try and get through it.

Bulletin No. 49 issued 30th March 1990 - BX GTi 4x4 new vehicle characteristics states;
Valve clearance (with engine cold:
Inlet 0.15 to 0.25mm
Exhaust 0.35 to 0.45mm
I cant tell you if there is anything newer than this as i don't have a complete collection of bulletins.

Autodata does list these clearances for the d2e engine but not for the later 1991 d2f variant.
